Mine's layered, which they say shoudn't be done, but it all depends on the shape of your face and how tight the curl is. Mine does the pyramind head thing when it's all one length. Having shorter layers on top means that it tangles less; there's more definition to the curl.
I like to pin back some of the curls on top with small cute pins and leave a few face framing pieces. This also helps disguise lack of volume on top.
Or pull it into a loose, but high, pony tail, and leave a curl loose at the bottom to rest on your shoulder.
Do not use thin plastic hairbands. With curls, a headband has to be thicker/sturdier so that it holds and doesn't get lost. Wider ribbons or thin scarves are good as accessories to your outfit.
A lot depends on the length also. I had it really short for a while, since the weight pulls the curl out when it gets longer, and with it short, I didn't do much beyond making sure the curls were defined. You don't want them too fakey/perfect, but you have to reduce frizz.
